Марк біля зруйнованого російською ракетою будинку

A rocket destroyed a house, but not faith

Russia continues to terrorize civilians in Ukraine. Another missile attack on Kyiv and the region has brought pain and suffering to many Ukrainian families.
In the first days of the full-scale war in 2022, the family of Mark Sergeev was forced to leave Melitopol. The family lost their homes and everything they had. And here again is a difficult test. Already in Kyiv, they found themselves at the epicenter of the explosion of a Russian Iskander missile weighing more than 300 kg.
At that moment, the whole family was at home: his wife and three children.

“The shelling began at five in the morning, we woke up to a very loud sound of a rocket. After 30 seconds, there was an explosion, and everything turned upside down. A window fell on my wife, a wardrobe fell on me. I shouted: “Are you alive, boys?” The children were on the third floor, under the roof, there was their children’s room. Topher, the eldest, began to shout that everything was fine. But we did not hear the younger. I got up and made sure that everything was fine with him too. I did not recognize the house — all the doors were turned to the right and left. I realized that everything was serious. Through the window, we saw cars on fire.”

A miracle that cannot be explained by logic: everyone survived. But for the family of pastor and chaplain Mark Sergeev, this is an answer to daily prayers, which for them is a real shield of God from Russian missiles and drones.

“And now we are all alive. Such is the mercy of God. You could have died — you, your wife, your children. It is such a miracle that when you look at the scale, you think: someone could have died, but everyone is alive, and there are no wounded.”

Three hours after the explosion, Mark was already standing in the church, thanking God for his life.

“I take my wife, we are all in dirty clothes after the explosion, what we found, what we wore. We went to the service. I took the microphone, went on stage, started singing, and the audience began to sob. The song was about David calling on the name of the Lord when it was very difficult. And this greatly inspired people. Then we invited church members to thank God right on the ruins of our house—for the fact that today we do not bury children, we are alive. In the evening, many people from the church came, and we sang to the Lord right here, opposite the house. I said, “I want to rejoice with you, even though it’s hard. We lost everything. But I want to rejoice before the Lord that I can raise my hands to heaven even when there is nothing left. The Lord has given us another day. And the Kingdom of God, the mission of Christ, is higher than us, for our comfort. Glory be to him for everything.”

In a frank interview, Mark says:
– what he felt at the time of the explosion;
– how the wife and children reacted;
– where God was on this terrible day;
– and why even among the ruins you can sing praises.

This is not just a story of survival — it is a testimony of God’s protection and faith, which is stronger than war.
